THE CAREGIVING WHO?

DECONSTRUCTING THE 5-Ws & H

WHO?

Who is my Mother’s Caregiver?

Me.

I am my Mother’s Caregiver.

Her Eldest Daughter.

Her only daughter.

Her lifeline allowing her to operate in the World surrounding her.

Who am I?

5-foot tall; 100-pounds.

Writer.

Sister/Friend/Cousin.

Child of God.

University of Michigan Alum.

I am a Wolverine!

Who was I before I was a Caregiver?

Senior Vice-President of a Global Ad Agency.

Marketing Executive Extraordinaire.

The Girl from the Clipper Games.

A funny, loyal, understanding, faithful Friend.

A favorite Cousin.

My Brother’s Sister—the West Coast Rider.

Who am I now?

My Mother’s Caregiver.

A mere shadow of my former self.

A Housekeeper, Medical Administrator, Secretary, Patient Advocate, Companion.

A disgruntled, often angry & resentful, Caregiving employee with no salary.

A busy, pre-occupied Friend and Cousin.

I am a Caregiver.

And when I look in the mirror, I don’t recognize the person looking back at me.

I’ve changed.

Being a Caregiver has changed me.

Who is my Mother’s Caregiver?

A part of me who I didn’t know existed.
