APPOINTMENTS
Today we have a doctor’s appointment. Not sure why I said, “we.” “We” don’t have any upcoming medical appointments—just my Mother.
Actually, it’s a Dental appointment. One of my Mother’s teeth fell out. Dealing with the dental issues of a vain elderly woman can be tedious.
The days of her million-dollar smile are gone. Medications make oral surgery dangerous. And paying thousands of dollars on reconstructive surgery at this time of life is simply inefficient. And there’s still the surgery and the real danger of problems in the operating chair.
Thankfully the Dentist is patient, and my Mother seemingly respects his opinion. He has a solution which will allow my Mom to smile confidently.
And so, this visit will be followed up with at least 3 additional appointments. And of course, my Mother would like to complete the process as soon as possible.
Next week, we see the Primary Care Physician for the semi-annual visit. And as far as I’m concerned, all this appointment is, is a “visit.”
If I don’t personally bring up problems or concerns, preferably with a proposed solution, everything remains the same.
During this time that I have been my Mother ‘s Caregiver, I have advocated for medication changes due to the fact that my Mother’s lifestyle has totally changed and her respective medical numbers have remained consistently in the acceptable to normal range.
This doctor believes in medication and does not usually admit that dietary or lifestyle changes can have an impact. Drug dealers have a similar philosophy.
I often have to intervene acknowledging that he does not know everything. He is just simply someone who took different classes in college. I graduated on the Dean’s List while I firmly believe that he was a C-Student. And so, although I am not a Doctor, I am forced to play one in my Mom’s everyday life.
Then there is the upcoming appointment with the Eye Doctor. My Mom is an avid reader and can occupy hours at a time reading about John Grisham’s, David Balducci’s and other mystery writers’ characters. This appointment is one that I feel is very necessary, if only to update the prescription on her reading glasses.
During this appointment she will pick out new glasses. I mentioned that my Mom is a tad vain; therefore, this is an activity she thoroughly enjoys.
Each medical appointment is often followed up by additional appointments. This is just the beginning. Fortunately, I decided not to schedule these appointments before now as there has been snowstorm after snowstorm after Blizzard most of this winter.
Now, along with the rest of the World, I am looking forward to Spring. Unfortunately, here in this Caregiver World, I also have a multitude of Doctor’s appointments to look forward to on the calendar and reluctantly on my mind.
Appointments, Blood work, X-rays, Pharmacies, Vaccines, Medication, Physician’s Notes and the Patient Portal—HELP!
My Mother is fine—she is well taken care of.
As for me, I’ll make an annual appointment with my Doctor when I have time.
