READING BETWEEN THE LINES…

WHEN THE CAREGIVER DIES OF NATURAL CAUSES

“Death by Natual Causes.”  That actually means that death occurs due to illness and its complications.  Death due to internal versus external forces.  Examples are Cancer, Stroke, Heart Disease, Sudden Organ Failure or Old Age.  That is a general definition courtesy of Wikipedia.   Unnatural Causes are things like Homicides, Accidents, Suicides, Medical Errors or Drug Overdoses.

Who Knew?

In which category does, “Death of a Caregiver,” belong?

Statistics show that often the Caregiver dies before the person for whom they are caring.   And sometimes, the Caregiver dies of “Natural Causes.”  Seriously.

Is Caregiving an external of an internal force?

Reading Between the Lines…

The duties of Caregiving cause Anger, and Frustration which can have physical implications.

The responsibilities of Caregiving can lead to certain behaviors from the Caregiver such as Isolation, and lack of Personal Care.

Since the act of Caregiving is the cause, I would say that it is an external force.  That being said, how can the Caregiver die of Natural Causes?

The typical external forces also have impacted the deaths of Caregivers.  Murder-Suicides are prevalent in Caregiving situations. Situations when the Caregiver has reached a point of no return.  THE CAREGIVER’S BAD DAY!

30% of Caregivers die first.

Would the Caregiver have died if…

  • The Caregiver wasn’t pre-occupied with someone else’s health
  • The Caregiver didn’t ignore any symptoms and took better care of oneself
  • The Caregiver spent more time talking to or spending time with friends
  • The Caregiver had more Assistance on a regular basis
  • The Caregiver had greater contact with other loved ones
  • The Caregiver had help
  • The Caregiver wasn’t responsible for every detail of someone else’s life
  • The Caregiver had a Break

Would the Caregiver have died if…they were not busy Caregiving?

The phrase, “Death by Natural Causes,” is NOT a clinical/medical definition but a legal definition.

Reading Between the Lines, when the Caregiver dies first, more often than not the Natural Cause of death is, “Death by Caregiving.”

Thirty percent of Caregivers die first; before the person for whom they are caring.
