AS A CAREGIVER I’VE LEARNED

THANKFUL FOR THE THINGS I’VE LEARNED

Or

HOW USEFUL WILL THESE THINGS BE AFTER CAREGIVING?

I have learned, earned, cultivated a degree of Patience which uses are endless.  There will always be people, places and things that will require an extreme amount of Patience.  I am confident that there will be future moments which require my newly developed Patience.

I have perfected the skill of transferring health and beauty products from large bottles to smaller bottles which are easier for my Mother to handle.  To be honest, I have years of travel experience which prepared me for that task.  Even today (knowing that I am not going anywhere), I keep a travel cosmetic bag packed complete with 2-ounce travel bottles filled with my preferred shampoo, conditioner, lotion, etc.

I am Thankful for my 5-Senses.  I am grateful that all five, See, Hear, Taste, Touch and Smell, due to Caregiving, are working at new heights.

All 5-senses are very helpful during the daily/hourly/constant, Spill, Drop, Fall patrols.  My nose can detect the Smell of a spill moments after occurring.  And I can Hear the TV Remote fall to the floor from another room; thus, anticipating my Mom’s frantic calls for help.

I am Grateful for the ability to prepare a Tasty meal, package and freeze it so that it closely resembles a Stouffers Frozen Meal which my Mother seems to prefer.

I count Depends like a Gambler counts cards.  “You got to know when to hold them, know when to fold them, know when to walk away, know when to run…”  Hold enough in case Walgreens has an out-of-stock, Fold and throw them away immediately, and Run when your nose detects a bathroom disaster.

I have learned how to move around quietly.  I can tip-toe into my Mom’s room and turn down the TV volume without disturbing her rest in the least.  I can also casually sneak the TV remote behind my back and adjust the volume by Touch while saying, “Good Night Mom.”

I have a sense of the timing regarding her medication, and I often administer her medication before the smart watch alarm tells me that it’s time.  That makes me feel good.

My Mother is fine; she is well taken care of.  These newly developed skills have been helpful in my ability to do so.

But I have to be honest…

I really don’t see any use for these particular skills beyond Caregiving.  Except for the ability to always have a travel bag packed and that Patience thing.
